Uganda - Uganda Safari

Uganda the pearl of Africa offers very special opportunities for wildlife viewing as the National Parks are less crowded and it is possible to see the primates in their natural habitat surrounded by stunning scenery. However in an effort to try and preserve these endangered animals, permits are strictly limited and advance planning is strongly recommended.

Day 1 Met on arrival at Entebe Airport and transferred to Kampala city in the morning before leaving for Queen Elizabeth National Park stopping at Masindi for lunch. Visit the top of the dramatic Murchison Falls crashing through a narrow gorge. Brief game viewing in the evening. Overnight will be at Paraa Lodge in the park.

Day 2 Spend the day in the park. Game viewing north of the Nile where over 76 mammal species have been recorded, including spotted hyena, patas monkey and leopard. Later take a launch trip from Paraa to the bottom of the mighty frothy falls, passing through one of the most compelling stretches of the Nile, fringea by Borassus palms, acacias and stands of mahogany. Game viewing along the river is stunning, with some of the largest crocodiles left in Africa, hippos, elephants and birds, including the rare shoebill stork, basking on the banks of the Nile. Overnight at Paraa Lodge.

Day 3 Early start for Kibale National Park. Drive South to Fort Portal, past large tea estates. Continue to Ndali Lodge for overnight.

Day 4 Track the noisy chimps and other primates crashing around through the high canopy of the forest with colourful birds squawking nearby. Packed lunch. Afternoon leave for Queen Elizabeth National Park, keeping an eye out for game. Overnight at Mweya.

Day 5 An excursion to Kyambura gorge nearby to track the fast moving elusive chimpanzees, one of man’s closest relatives. The chimp population is quite mobile and viewing is unpredictable. The walk in this "lost world’’ is nevertheless enchanting, or visit the tropical Bee Care Centre to look at their range of community projects from bee keeping, honey making to the community nursery for children. Alternatively go for a nature walk in Maramagambo Forest. This forest harbours some unusual species – red- tailed and L’Hoest’s Monkey, potto, giant forest hog, pygmy antelope, and giant elephant shrew. You can also visit the bat caves and the Blue lake. In the afternoon a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel which is especially rewarding for viewing a variety of game, especially hippo, buffalo, elephant and a vast array of birds. Overnight at Mweya Lodge.

Day 6 Start for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Either drive via Ishasha, home of the tree climbing lion, roads permitting, or take the alternative route through cultivated expanses. Time permitting, go for a guided nature walk in the thick forest rich in birds, butterflies and primates. Overnight will be at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge.

Day 7 Either go gorilla tracking, walking up steep densely forested hills (subject to permit availability at time of booking). In this thick and humid forest you almost have to cut your way through the undergrowth but finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation is an inspiring moment. Tracking in Bwindi requires stamina and can often take most of the day. Alternatively go for a leisurely walk on one of the trails that meanders through the Impenetrable Forest. Overnight at Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge.

Day 8 Early start for Kampala, retracing your steps through this green and pleasant land. Picnic lunch en-route. Arrive Kampala late afternoon. Overnight at Sheraton Hotel.

Day 9 Transfer to the airport for your return flight to Nairobi.
