Kigoma is the starting point of most of our safaris to Gombe and Mahale National Parks. The largest
town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Kigoma is also the closest developed town to both parks.
Most of our itineraries begin and end in Kigoma.
Kigoma is home to the “Ha” tribe, which was the third largest tribe in Tanzania up until the 1940s
and is famous for its dagaa fishing and palm oil. Kigoma is also rich in history, being the place
where Europe and America sent an emissary to trace the whereabouts of the great scientist,
missionary and explorer, Dr. Livingstone. Surrounded by Lake Tanganyika on one side and scenic
hills and valleys on the other, a tour of Kigoma town becomes a fascinating part of your
Chimpanzee safari.

| | | The only luxury hotel in Kigoma, situated on an outcrop hill amid
a lush green natural landscape and gardens, overlooking the
crystal clear blue waters of Lake Tanganyika and the majestic
mountains of Congo. Approximately 20 minutes drive from the
airport, the hotel consists of thirty cottages, decorated in an old
world colonial style, each with a balcony that affords breathtaking
views of the lake and remarkable sunsets. All rooms have a/c, en-
suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, satellite television
and refrigerators.
Activities
More than just a point of relaxation during your tour, Kigoma Hilltop Hotel has a host of facilities to
ensure you make the most of your leisure time. There is an abundance of bird life within the
premises such as the Red Necked Spur fowl, the Helmeted Guinea Fowl and the African Fish Eagle.
Vervet monkeys are also seen in and around the hotel area. We have a spectacular flower shaped
swimming pool facing the lake, a well-equipped gym, tennis courts, table tennis, pool table and a
private beach.
Meals
There are two main locations within the hotel where meals are usually taken. Breakfast and lunch
are normally at the Sangara Restaurant. Dinners, weather permitting, are next to the swimming
pool under the star lit sky. A variety of cuisine including Continental, Chinese, Italian, Indian and
specialties include the fresh lake fish caught by local fishermen. |

We understand you want to get the most out of your safari and as such make brief stops in Kigoma
to allow you a relaxing break and change of scenery during your Chimpanzee tours. A night in
Kigoma is required when transferring from one park to the other. In order to ensure you do not
miss your flight/ train, the last night of your safari is also spent in Kigoma. An extensive sight
seeing itinerary of all the major tourist attractions in Kigoma and Ujiji usually forms part of the tour.

 | | Dr. Livingstone Memorial |
Kigoma houses the famous Dr Livingstone Memorial, which
contains some of the last remains of the surroundings of this
intrepid explorer’s house. Under two historical mango trees, the
memorial’s caretaker tells visitors the tale of Dr Livingstone
fascinating and his famous expedition into Africa.
Katonga Fishing Village
No tour of Kigoma is complete without visiting the typical African fishing village of Katonga. Here
you will see spectacular displays of tropical fish along with the catching, drying and selling of fish.
Your guide will also provide an insight into the systematic division of work the villagers follow to
ensure a successful and smooth operation.
Local market
Like any other markets in Tanzania, the local markets in Kigoma are vibrant and humming with
activity. The small crowded stalls are stocked with kangas and vitenges, commonly worn by the
local women and perfect for gifts and souvenirs. This is also the place to see the different tribes and
cultures living in Kigoma.
