Katavi Park PDF Print E-mail

The third largest national park in Tanzania, Katavi offers wildlife in abundance. It boasts Tanzania's greatest concentration of Buffalo and Hippopotamus. Huge herds of Elephants, Roan Antelope, Topi, Zebras, Impalas, Eland, Waterbuck and more, make Katavi a haven for predators like Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Wild Dogs. Birdlife at Lake Katavi, particularly in the wet season, is also abundant and includes Plovers, Sand grouse and the Spuring wing Goose.

Named after a legendary hunter called Katabi, Katavi was established in 1974 and is one of the most remote, vast, natural and pristine parks in Africa. We are located in southwest Tanzania, east of Lake Tanganyika in the Mpanda district, Rukwa region. The landscape is dominated by two seasonal lakes called Katavi and Chada, along with miombo woodland, grass plains to the north, riverine vegetation, Mlele escarpment and the waterfalls of Chorangwa, Lukima and Ndido.

The rainfall pattern is bimodal, with short rains in November and December, and longer rains in March through May. The park is open throughout the year but is best to visit in May and October, and mid December to February.

"One must desire something to be alive." - Margaret Deland

Katavi Camp is situated in the centre of the park, on an elevated point overlooking the vast plains of
Katisunga. Herds of animals coming in search of fresh grazing grounds and water provide the
perfect view right from your tent. Tamarind and Acacia trees provide shade and the sunsets behind
the distant woodlands surrounding the seasonal lake provide a perfect background to the stunning
scenery.
The camp consists of six spacious tents, where every minor detail has been addressed to ensure
comfort and luxury – from sumptuous linens to international cuisine, blending in with the natural
surroundings to uphold the spirit of Katavi.

Though there is plenty of wildlife at your doorstep, literally, we intend to give you the complete Katavi adventure experience that you leave having seen the best of what the park has to offer. We supply 4x4 vehicles for most game viewing at Katavi.

The drives are centered across the woodland areas along the seasonal lakes of Chada and Katavi, where most of the game is found - including the big cats. The Iku area provides the best spectacles of Hippopotami and Crocodiles. Game viewing is mostly done in the mornings and late afternoons.

Having our camp located at the heart of the park, where the biggest concentration of animals resides, gives us the selection of organized short, guided walks in the late afternoons. Clients are accompanied by armed rangers into some of the most spectacular sites in the park, allowing clients to enjoy the unique tranquil bliss of being a part of nature.

With more than 4,000 sq km to explore, one camp is just not enough. Concentration of game are
scattered in different regions of the park, some quite far from the main camp. For those seeking
that further step into adventure, fly camping offers a distinct experience of the distant areas, rich in
terms of game and scenery. We offer our clients the opportunity to fly camp at different areas of the
park and recommend 3 nights for this.

All our tents are made from heavy-duty canvas material with ample space to relax and walk around.
They are well ventilated with zip down gauze windows and roll up flap doors. The tents have been
placed meticulously to enhance the view. The décor is of a precise selection to engulf you in the
African Safari atmosphere.

Each unit contains single or double wooden beds fitted with firm
mattresses and mosquito protection. Other furnishings in the unit include a writing desk and chair,
bedside table, lamp and clothes rack. Each unit has an en suite with hot water for showers (solar
heaters), basin and flushing toilet. The units are adequately spaced apart to ensure your privacy.
